Storage and delivery are charged only if you host the originals with Cloudflare. If your images live in R2, S3 or on your own server and you use Cloudflare purely to resize them, transformations are the only line on the bill.

What counts as a unique transformation

This is the single thing people get wrong, and it is worth being precise about because the misunderstanding runs in both directions. A unique transformation is one source image combined with one particular set of options, counted once per month. It is not counted per request. If a hundred thousand visitors all load the same product photo at the same width, that is one transformation, not a hundred thousand.

What multiplies your count is variants, not traffic. Serving a single photo at six widths, in two formats, is twelve unique transformations. Do that across eight hundred products and you are at nine thousand six hundred, comfortably past the five thousand free allowance, on a catalogue that might get very modest traffic. The bill tracks the shape of your image pipeline rather than how popular you are.

That has a practical consequence worth acting on. Trimming your responsive image set from six widths to four cuts a third off the transformation count and, in most designs, changes nothing anyone can see. Standardising on a single modern format instead of serving both WebP and AVIF halves it again. These are cheap changes that a plugin generating a dozen variants per upload will never make for you.

Cloudflare renamed this product from Image Resizing to Image Transformations, so older tutorials, plugin settings and blog posts still use the previous name for the same feature. If you are following a guide that refers to Image Resizing, it is describing what is now called Image Transformations, and the pricing model described here is the one that applies.

How much does Cloudflare Image Transformations cost?
The first 5,000 unique transformations each month are free. Beyond that it is $0.50 per 1,000. If you also store the originals with Cloudflare, storage is $5 per 100,000 images a month and delivery is $1 per 100,000 images. Transforming images that live elsewhere costs nothing but the transformation fee.
Is a transformation billed every time an image loads?
No. Transformations are billed per unique combination of source image and options, once per month, regardless of how many times that variant is then served. A single image at one size viewed a million times is one billable transformation. Adding a new width or format to that same image is what creates another one.
Is Image Resizing the same as Image Transformations?
Yes. Cloudflare renamed Image Resizing to Image Transformations, and the feature, the URL format and the pricing model are the same thing under a new name. Documentation, plugins and tutorials written before the change still refer to Image Resizing.
