About Lorem Ipsum

Lorem Ipsum is dummy text used in the printing and typesetting industry since the 1500s. It provides a natural-looking distribution of letters for previewing layouts and visual design without the distraction of readable content.

Placeholder text exists to stop people reading the words while they judge the layout, which is exactly why it should never survive to production. The classic Latin passage does that job well because it looks like language without being any language a reader will attempt. Its one real drawback is that its word and sentence lengths match Latin rather than the language you are actually shipping, so a layout that fits perfectly here can overflow once translated.

Where does the text come from?
A passage of Cicero written in 45 BC, garbled by a printer in the fifteenth century and used for type specimens ever since. The opening words are a fragment of a longer sentence, which is why it begins mid thought.
Should I use it for a real design?
For layout, yes. For anything you are judging on tone, length or scanability, no: real copy behaves differently, and a page that looks balanced with placeholder text often does not once the actual words arrive.
Will it affect my search ranking?
Only if it reaches production, where it looks to a search engine like a page with nothing to say. It is a common enough mistake that searching for the opening words turns up live pages on real sites.
Why do my translated pages overflow?
Because Latin is not a good proxy for word length. German and Finnish run considerably longer than English, Chinese and Japanese much shorter, so a layout tested only against placeholder text has not been tested against its own content.
Can I generate more than a few paragraphs?
Yes, though past a point it stops being useful. If you need a lot of it to test a page, the more informative test is usually the real content at its longest plausible length rather than an arbitrary wall of Latin.
