About QR Codes

A QR code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores text, URLs or contact details. Higher error-correction levels make the code more resistant to damage but increase its density. Everything is generated in your browser, so the data you encode never leaves your device.

QR codes bridge print and digital content: menus, business cards, event tickets, packaging, Wi-Fi sharing, payments and posters. Generating a QR code from a link lets anyone open it by pointing a phone camera at the code, with no typing and no extra app to install.

Branding a code works because of error correction. The modules covered by a letter or a logo are treated as damage, and level H can rebuild about thirty percent of the code, which is why this tool moves to level H the moment you add a centre badge. The trade-off is density: the same content needs a bigger grid at level H than at level L, so a long URL becomes a busier code. Keep the badge under a third of the width, keep the four-module quiet zone, and test the printed result on more than one phone before you commit it to a menu, a poster or packaging.

How big can the logo or letter in the middle be?
The slider stops at 32 percent of the code width, and the tool warns you below that if the error-correction level cannot support the size you picked. As a working ceiling, a badge is safe up to about 16 percent at level L, 25 percent at level M and 32 percent at levels Q and H. Those numbers are not in the QR standard; they come from rendering codes at each combination, shrinking them to the size a phone camera actually sees and reading them back.
Do QR codes expire?
The code itself never does. It is a printed pattern with no clock inside it, so a code you make today will read the same in ten years. What expires is whatever it points at. A code carrying a link works only for as long as that link does, and a code made through a tracking service stops working the day the subscription lapses, because the pattern points at that company rather than at you. Codes from this tool carry the content directly, so there is nothing behind them that anyone can switch off.
Can I change where a QR code points after it is printed?
Not with a static code, and everything this tool produces is static. The content sits inside the pattern, so changing it means printing a new one. Redirect services get around this by encoding a short address they own and changing where that forwards, which works but leaves your printed material depending on another company staying in business and keeping the link alive. The same behaviour on your own domain, with your own analytics, is a small piece of software rather than a generator.
How small can I print a QR code?
The usual rule of thumb is that the code should be about a tenth of the distance it will be read from, so a poster read from two metres wants roughly twenty centimetres and a business card wants two to three. Two centimetres is a sensible floor even for close scanning, and a denser code needs more room than a sparse one, so a long link printed small is the combination that fails. Keep the four-module quiet zone, and print from the SVG rather than enlarging a PNG.
