About Text Analysis

  • Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute (average adult reading speed).
  • Speaking time is estimated at 130 words per minute.
  • Sentences are detected by punctuation marks (. ! ?).

Counts are simple to produce and easy to misread. A word count depends on what you consider a word, which is why two tools disagree on the same text: hyphenated compounds, numbers and contractions are all judgement calls. Reading time is a rougher estimate still, since it assumes an average pace on straightforward prose, and technical writing is read considerably more slowly than that. Use the numbers to compare drafts rather than to hit a target.

Why does my word count differ from my editor's?
Because there is no single definition of a word. Hyphenated compounds may count as one or two, numbers and symbols may or may not count at all, and a heading may be included or ignored. The difference is usually a percent or two and rarely matters.
How is reading time worked out?
From the word count at an average silent reading pace of roughly two hundred and fifty words a minute. That figure suits ordinary prose; technical material, anything with code in it, and text in a second language all take considerably longer.
What counts as a sentence?
A run of text ending in a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Abbreviations inflate the count, so a paragraph full of e.g. and Ltd. will look as though it has more sentences than it does.
Is a lower reading level better?
Usually, for anything meant to be read quickly by people who did not choose to be there. It is not a measure of quality: a readability score cannot tell whether a sentence is clear, only whether it is short and uses common words.
Does my text get uploaded?
No. Everything is counted in your browser, which is worth knowing because the things people measure are often unpublished drafts, client work or something under embargo.
